Mokume Gane is a very difficult and time consuming process of laminating precious metals together and working the resulting stack as a single piece. The technique originated in feudal Japan to produce ornaments and fittings to compliment the laminated steel of Japanese swords. Forging, twisting, cutting, or otherwise manipulating the layered material can produce many different organic looking patterns. The Japanese word "mokume-gane" means "wood grained metal".
